Maurice is the Manager for Workplace Relations based in the Brisbane office and has 40 years’ experience where he has been strongly involved working in workplace relations, industrial law and employment law.
Maurice demonstrates his dedication and commitment to minimising employer risks for his clients by assisting on non-compliance with employer workplace obligations and impediments to practical implementation of operational performance improvements. His commitment is motivated by his dedication to achieve sustainable business performance levels which enable his clients’ increased financial success and quality outcomes. The two key industries in which Maurice has had most experience are construction and manufacturing. The issues he has helped to overcome from the construction industry has involved labour hire, project employment and the use of subcontractors, enterprise bargaining, industrial action (protected or unprotected) and union right of entry. He has also worked closely with his clients to manage workforce transition to advanced technology, enterprise bargaining and industrial action within the manufacturing industry.
Maurice’s clients have been many throughout the years, but mainly they come to Maurice to seek clarity, practicality and comprehensiveness to the solutions he is able to offer. He has worked with clients who have been confronted with challenging problems that has not been of their own making but has been caused by a third party, or clients who have identified issues and have requested that Maurice be their support to provide professional advice and strategies to overcome specific challenges. Clients such as these connect with him because his professional knowledge, experience and skillset can provide a comprehensive solution to their problems.
Throughout the years, Maurice has seen many significant achievements result from his dedication and hard work for his clients: In the early 1990s, as General Counsel for the Electoral and Administrative Review Commission (Queensland), he led the administrative law policy team which developed a suite of statutes comprehensively reforming all aspects of administrative law in Queensland, as recommended by the Fitzgerald Inquiry; In 1999, Maurice appeared in the High Court as counsel for the Australian Electoral Commission in the case of Sue v Hill, a successful challenge to the eligibility of the One Nation Senator-elect Heather Hill to sit in the Senate, on the basis that, as a British citizen, she was ineligible to be a member of the Senate; In the mid-1990s, as Public Inquiry Director for the Australian Communications Authority (later the Australian Communications and Media Authority), he conducted national public inquiries into the environmental impact of telecommunications infrastructure (especially mobile phone towers and broadband cable roll-out), including chairing public meetings in State capital cities.
